Jiadi Zhu receives Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship 2023 North America


Student Mathilde Franckel awarded an Ovshinsky Award from the American Physical Society


Dr. Rehan Younas receives the 2023 Nicollian Award for Best Student Presentation of the 54th IEEE Semiconductor Interface Specialists Conference (SISC) for his talk titled “Ferromagnetism in Tungsten Diselenide and the Role of Selenium Vacancies.”


Finley Donachie announced as the eighth winner of the Class of 1957 Spectrum Award.  

“Fin” received his BS in Materials Science & Engineering, Summa Cum Laude, and has relocated to California where he will pursue doctoral study at California Institute of Technology following a summer internship with Applied Materials in Silicon Valley.


Margaret Quinn named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow 

Margaret Quinn, third-year graduate student in the Applied Physics Program at Northwestern University in the Rondinelli research group, was awarded an NSF-GRFP fellowship. Her interests are in novel ferroelectric materials and formulating theories of solid-state systems, including electronic properties, magnetism, correlation, and phase transitions using first-principles methods.


Mark Turiansky selected as a UC President’s 2024 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Fellow 

UC Santa Barbara Postdoc Mark Turiansky was selected for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and learn from a host of Nobel Laureates this summer in Germany. He was among 650 young scientists from throughout the world who experienced and contributed to the unique atmosphere of the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. This year’s meeting was dedicated to Physics. Mark’s participation was enabled by a highly competitive UC President’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Fellowship. 


Finley Donachie Receives Prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Donachie plans to do research on advancing the Thermal Laser Epitaxy (TLE) system at Caltech. It  is the only TLE system in the USA and still a work in progress, he says. “This novel method will allow us to synthesize materials that exhibit quantum phenomena using high-melting-temperature refractory metals, a technique only paralleled by a similar system in Germany.”


Peter Satterthwaite receives Mathworks Fellowship


EK Kim wins Best Oral Student Presentation Award at DRC 2024

He presented AlN/GaN/AlN HEMTs for RF amplifiers with 3 different designs: quantum well with both 2DEG and 2DHG, quantum well with 2DEG only and thick GaN channel. The study clearly demonstrate the advantages of the QW with 2DEG only.


UG Student Saumya Vashishtha receives a Best Poster Award Honorable Mention at EMC 2024

He presented growth of cubic TMN on sapphire substrates with a range of off-cut angles. Saumya works closely with PhD student Anand Ithepalli.
